Certainly there are normal situations such as slipping and falling on a wet bathroom floor in the office, or back pain from vigorous lifting. Then there are bizarre circumstances. Imagine getting compensated for an injury while playing an outdoor sport. If that sounds too strange to be true, then turn away now.
Workers’ Comp Awarded for Kickball Injury
On Wednesday, the South Carolina Supreme Court made a ruling that is rarely seen. Stephen Whigham, who works for Jackson Dawson Communications, a public relations firm, got injured while playing in a company kickball game. The court ruled in favor of Whigham and said he is entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. The reason for this ruling is because the kickball game was a company mandate and Stephen was required to be there. His injury resulted in two broken bones in his leg and after two surgeries; doctors told him he will need a knee replacement. A future hearing will determine how much Whigham will ultimately receive for his injuries.
Although bizarre, circumstances like this are not always preventable and are often just “freak” accidents.
