Driving Dangers: The Surge of Car Accidents on Connecticut’s I-84

Feb 27, 2024

Connecticut Car Accidents on the Rise

Slicing diagonally through the state, I-84 is a major artery in the Connecticut highway system. Connecting highly populated areas like Danbury, Waterbury, New Britain, Hartford, and Storrs – if you live in Connecticut, then you are likely familiar with I-84 and perhaps travel it frequently. Unfortunately, there has never been a more dangerous time to be traveling on the interstate.

In January, a New Britain man died after rear-ending a tractor trailer in Cheshire near Exit 26. Then in February, 2 women died in a wrong-way crash near Exit 61 in Manchester. The Connecticut Crash Data Repository (CTCDR) is reporting that as of February 2024 we’ve already seen more traffic deaths than in all 2023. And, according to the CTCDR, in the last 3 years alone there have been over 284,000 accidents involving over half-a-million vehicles.

This is a deadly trend that should frighten every driver in our state as car accidents can have devastating consequences for victims and their families. These damages can include physical and emotional trauma, financial burdens, and long-term disabilities. As advocates for car accident victims, the BJM Law Group is committed to shedding light on this important issue and providing support to those affected.

What Are the Most Frequent Causes of Deadly Car Accidents in Connecticut?

Fatal car accidents, of course, are preventable. Unfortunately, some drivers make careless choices that lead to tragic consequences. According to a 2023 NBC Connecticut report, the state Transportation Safety Research Center data indicates that aggressive driving and speeding during rush hour gets worse as the work week goes on and that driving on weekend nights is particularly dangerous. The top factors typically involved in deadly car crashes include:

Distracted Driving: Infuriatingly, some drivers let themselves be distracted rather than focus on the road and their surroundings. Checking cellphones to text, call, email or use an app is the top distraction. Other prime examples of distracted driving include adjusting the entertainment or navigation system, eating and self-grooming.

Reckless Driving/Speeding: Going too fast is the most common form of negligent driving and it occurs all too frequently. Drivers who exceed the speed limit face a greater risk of losing control of the vehicle. They also have less time to react to changes in traffic patterns and need more distance to stop if there is a sudden slowdown or hazard.

When a driver chooses to ignore applicable traffic laws and signage, disregards the speed limit, changes lanes without warning, or refuses to yield right-of-way, serious accidents can happen. Tailgating is another form of reckless driving. Following the car in front of you too closely can lead to rear-end collisions that cause whiplash and other serious injuries, or worse.

Drunk Driving: A driver who is under the influence of alcohol and/or illicit drugs, over-the-counter or prescription medication is likely to experience impaired concentration. An impaired driver is a negligent driver. Drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher are legally intoxicated and breaking the law. However, even small amounts of BAC in a driver can increase the risk of an accident. A BAC of 0.02, which is reached roughly after one standard drink, leads to some loss of judgment.
